“It’s not unpatriotic to denounce an injustice committed on our behalf, perhaps it’s the most patriotic thing we can do.”
_E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadgly
“How much do you think our coming invasion of Iraq is due to oil?”, I asked the young-looking, sharply-dressed military captain passing by the lobby desk enroute to an on-air appearance. Bracing myself for strong push-back, I was caught off-guard by his nonchalant reply, “About fifty percent!”
Here was a young captain – Air Force, I believe it was? – prepared to offer up his life in the service of our country, who believed that possibly FIFTY PERCENT of the reason we were about to invade Iraq was attributable to the George W. Bush Administration’s desire to take control of Iraq’s oil!
You might recall how masterfully the Bush Administration had marketed the need to invade Iraq (“We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.” _ Condoleezza Rice), having convinced our nation and the world at large the the intelligence was INDISPUTABLE, confirming that Iraq posed an IMMINENT threat to world peace.
It appeared incredulous that most of the news organizations were afraid to appear too unpatriotic by questioning the administrations claims to any great degree of skepticism. Any remaining doubts were OBLITERATED by Secretary of State Colin Powell’s brilliantly forceful and convincing UN speech, where he declared, “These are facts …”.
With the world now satisfied that the ONE person remaining in the Bush Administration whose integrity was unassailable had just ‘closed the sale’ for the invasion, it was INEVITABLE at this point!
Now, some almost fourteen years later, it can reasonably be said that virtually ALL of the the problems emanating out of the Middle East have their origin in this horrendous, horrific blunder, namely, the Iraq Invasion!
Hence my conviction to refuse to remain silent, using my voice to speak truth to power, hopefully, in matters where our government appears to be mis-leading its’ citizens. Hopefully, you will find my political articles posted on my blog page THOUGHT-provoking?!
